Sunbeams Nursery at North Petherwin School

Welcome to our Sunbeams page!

We are a Foundation Stage class made up of Nursery (Sunbeams) and Reception (Rainbows) children. Our teacher is  Mrs Becky Johns and we have four other staff members who work across the week; Mrs Laura Gubbin, Mrs Gaby Hunt, Mrs Claire Griffin and Miss Lucy Edwards.

We are lucky to have a fantastic classroom space enabling us to explore and learn through our play. Our environment evolves and develops alongside the children's interests to ensure we are happy, confident and curious learners. Playful learning experiences are planned at key times of the day which help us to expand and consolidate our knowledge. In school we support all our children to develop their skills in becoming independent, resilient, collaborative and reflective in all they do. Our children are encouraged to see mistakes as opportunities to learn and to thrive when challenged.

We offer friendly and high quality early years education and play experiences for children aged 2 to 5 years.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is the cultural capital, we know our pupils need so that they can gain the knowledge, skills and understanding they require for success. They can only do that if we embed the right habits for learning through the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning – Play and Exploration, Active Learning and Creative and Critical Thinking. Our EYFS Curriculum has been designed to reflect the nature of our school environment, the seasons of the year and the nature around our school. It aims to teach the children how their environment compares to different places, cultures and nature in other parts of the world.

Our enabling environment and warm, skillful adult interactions support the children as they begin to link learning to their play and exploration. Following the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, we plan activities and enhancements both indoors and outdoors which aim to encourage children’s independence and imagination across the 7 areas of Learning and Development. We strive to provide a broad, diverse and stimulating curriculum which centres around each individual child’s needs and interests.
