Welcome to Class 2 - also known as Mercury Class. We are lucky enough to be taught by our wonderful teachers: Mrs Castle and Mrs Cooper. Miss Downes and Miss Deborah are our fabulously supportive teaching assistants who make sure we have everything we need whether that's support for our learning or a gentle chat. We have lots of fun, laughter, learning adventures and exciting opportunities to explore new learning. We are also a very caring and friendly group of children , who look out for each other. In fact, our whole school is a caring and welcoming school -which I am sure you already know as you are a part of our family.

Mrs Castle and Mrs Cooper, our teachers, support us to become confident and unique members of the class. They love for us to blossom and grow as individuals who enjoy leading their own learning - even if it might not be what they had planned for that day! Everything they plans helps us to develop our key learning dispositions: resilience, curiosity, independence, collaboration and reflective. These dispositions help us on our learning journey throughout our time at Werrington. Oh - and guess what - our teachers even like it if you make mistakes - they say it is good to make a mistake as it helps us to learn. So never be afraid to have a go, to try your best, be brave and get stuck in as there are so many people here to help you grow and fly as a learner. In fact, they want you to be just like a butterfly, emerging from your chrysalis and flying free as you experience all that we have to offer at Werrington.

You will find out that Mrs Castle and Mrs Cooper will do anything they can to inspire and motivate us to be fabulous life long learners.

Love of Reading / Phonics

Every day, our children participate in

Reception children take part in Squiggle Whie You Wiggle- developing their early writing skills
Daily Little Wandle phonics sessions taught by fully trained Little Wandle teachers.
SEN 1:1 phonics is used for children with SEN
Daily Keep Up is planned for children who are falling behind.
Children also take part in 3 reading practice sessions a week which focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension.
Drawing Club to bring stories, characters and ideas to life with high-quality texts which immerse children in the skills for early mark-making and writing
Talk Through Stories, with books planned over a 2 year rolling program which immerses children in rich language, vocabulary and narrative.

By the end of Reception, we aim for our children to be secure in Phase 4, enabling them to confidently segment, blend, and read simple words and sentences. They should be fluent in decoding using known GPCs, read common exception words, and apply these skills to read closely matched decodable books.
